technology critic and essayist

Bill Thompson is a ‘controversialist’ – at least according to The Guardian – and pioneer of new media in the UK. Founder of The Guardian’s New Media Lab in the mid 1990’s, he ran the world’s first live Webcast from the ICA in 1994, created the first Website for an elected representative within the EU (Anne Campbell, 1995) and ran the first and so far only online debate for the Prime Minister’s Office (Nexus, 1997). Now he writes and talks about this stuff.

Safe European Home

On August 9 2002 The Register published an essay of mine, entitled 'Damn the Constitution'.

In it I outlined my views of the way the US dominated the cultural and legal aspects of today's Internet and outlined a proposal to zone the Net and ensure that within Europe we could do things our own way.

The essay generated a lot of interest. You can read the Register version. You can also read the Register followups - a selection of my emails, and a discussion between me and Andrew Orlowski.

I wrote a piece for The Guardian about the topic - available here - and also discussed some of the same issues in my column on the BBC Website. And I appeared on Online Tonight to argue the case with David Lawrence - listen to it here.

On the evening of Thursday August 22nd I appeared on Newsnight on BBC2, at around 2245 UK time, debating with John Perry Barlow, but little light was shed on the issues and anyway Newsnight doesn't have an on-demand archive :-)

But if you bump into David Mery he has the whole thing on his phone [yes - his phone].
